In her paintings, Aubrey Levinthal (b. 1986, lives and works in Philadelphia) bears witness to everyday life in an almost meticulous manner. Inherent to her self-portraits, as well as images of friends, family, and ephemeral moments she picks up in her neighborhood, is a slow and diffuse sense of time. Her works use a palette of light greens, yellows, ochres, pastels, as well as darker colors, and their perspectives are often dislocated, evincing an air of melancholy and emotional imbalance. Her paintings oscillate between beauty and disillusionment, addressing loneliness as an accompanying phenomenon of our life in late capitalism, which is oriented towards performance and efficiency.
Aubrey Levinthal’s work is featured in a number institutional collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia; Ballinglen Museum of Art, County Mayo, Ireland; the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, West Palm Beach, FL; the Flag Art Foundation, New York; the Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; the Danjuma Collection, Esher, UK; the Kriket Foundation, Berlin; and the X Museum, Beijing; the PAFA Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among others. Her work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Flag Art Foundation in New York in 2023, and she has been featured in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Museum MORE, Gorssel, Netherlands; the Xiao Museum, Rizhao, China; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; Ballinglen Museum of Art, County Mayo, Ireland; the Painting Center, New York; and the Queens College Arts Center, New York, among others.
Aubrey Levinthal’s first publication CLOUD COVER, with texts by Dorothea Zwirner and Russel Tovey, was released on the occasion of her eponomous solo exhibition during Berlin Gallery Weekend held at Haverkampf Leistenschneider, Berlin in 2024. In summer 2025, a comprehensive monograph, Mirror Matter, was published by Ingleby Gallery, devoted to her work over the past decade, with texts by Jennifer Higgie and Hettie Judah.
Aubrey Levinthal is represented by Marianne Boesky, New York; Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh and Haverkampf Leistenschneider, Berlin.
