Anlässlich der diesjährigen Berlin Art Week freuen wir uns, ein generationenübergreifendes und transnationales Ausstellungsprojekt in Berlin zu realisieren, in deren Zentrum neue Arbeiten der US-amerikanischen Malerin Aubrey Levinthal (geb. 1986) stehen. Ihre jüngsten Gemälde werden in eine direkte visuelle und inhaltliche Beziehung zu Werken von Biala (Janice Biala, 1903–2000) und Tal R (geb. 1967) gesetzt, die für Levinthal wesentliche Bezugspunkte und Inspirationsquellen darstellen. Die Präsentation untersucht, wie diese drei unterschiedlichen Generationen das unmittelbare Umfeld als Ausgangspunkt wählen, um die Grenzen zwischen persönlicher Erfahrung und universeller Erzählung auszuloten. Während Aubrey Levinthal Szenen des alltäglichen Lebens, Interieurs und Fragmente ihres persönlichen Umfelds festhält, destilliert auch Tal R das Private – Freunde, Familie und häusliche Räume – in seine ganz eigene visuelle Sprache. Die Malerin Biala, die eigentlich Schenehaia Tworkovska hieß und sich nach ihrem Geburtsort Biała Podlaska in Polen benannte, wiederum übertrug zeitlebens Stillleben und private Wohn- und Atelierräume in eine zeitlose, poetische Form. Sie schlägt eine einzigartige kunsthistorische Brücke: Tief in der École de Paris und dem französischen Post-Impressionismus verwurzelt, brachte sie gleichzeitig die rohe Energie und den gestischen Pinselstrich der New York School und des amerikanischen Abstrakten Expressionismus in ihre Arbeiten ein.
Bialas Werk wurde bislang nur einmal in Berlin ausgestellt, und zwar 1966 im Amerika-Haus in Berlin in der Gruppenausstellung „10 Américains de Paris“. Ihr Bild Untitled (Three Glasses) von 1962 wurde zwar 2022 im Museum Barberini in Potsdam im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Die Form der Freiheit. Internationale Abstraktion nach 1945“ gezeigt, in Berlin selbst ist dies jedoch mit dieser Ausstellung nach genau 60 Jahren eine Premiere.
Die Ausstellung verbindet eine malerische Position des 20. Jahrhunderts mit aktueller Figuration zu einem transnationalen Diskurs über Malerei und lässt so einen intimen Dialog über die Darstellbarkeit von Vulnerabilität und das Vergehen von Zeit in der modernen Malerei entstehen.

On the occasion of this year’s Berlin Art Week, we are delighted to realize a cross-generational and transnational exhibition project in Berlin, centered around new works by US painter Aubrey Levinthal (b. 1986). Her most recent paintings are placed in a direct visual and thematic relationship with works by Biala (Janice Biala, 1903–2000) and Tal R (b. 1967), both of whom represent vital reference points and sources of inspiration for Levinthal. The presentation explores how these three distinct generations select their immediate surroundings as a starting point to navigate the boundaries between personal experience and universal narrative. While Aubrey Levinthal captures scenes of everyday life, interiors, and fragments of her personal environment, Tal R similarly distills the private realm—friends, family, and domestic spaces—into his own distinct visual language. Meanwhile, the painter Biala—born Schenehaia Tworkovska, who named herself after her birthplace of Biała Podlaska in Poland—spent her lifetime translating still lifes and private domestic and studio spaces into a timeless, poetic form. She bridges a unique art-historical gap: deeply rooted in the École de Paris and French Post-Impressionism, she simultaneously infused her work with the raw energy and gestural brushwork of the New York School and American Abstract Expressionism.
To date, Biala’s work has been exhibited only once in Berlin, in the 1966 group exhibition “10 Américains de Paris” at the Amerika-Haus Berlin. Although her 1962 painting “Untitled (Three Glasses)” was shown in 2022 at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam as part of the exhibition “The Shape of Freedom: International Abstraction after 1945,” this upcoming exhibition marks her return to Berlin proper after exactly 60 years.
By weaving together a 20th-century painterly position with contemporary figuration, the exhibition fosters a transnational discourse on painting, generating an intimate dialogue on the representation of vulnerability and the passage of time in modern painting.
