Die meisten von uns sind so an das Lesen gewöhnt, dass wir vergessen, dass jeder Buchstabe eine Form und jedes Wort eine eigene Komposition ist. Die Schrift, die wir täglich lesen – in E-Mails und Büchern, auf Verpackungen und Schildern –, hat eine bedeutende ästhetische Dimension. Die US-amerikanische Künstlerin EJ Hauser hat sich Grafik- und Typografiestrategien für ihre philosophischen Zwecke und Arbeiten zu eigen gemacht und offenbart uns einen neuen Blick auf das, was wir im Alltag zwischen all den Texten nicht mehr sehen.
Die quasi-abstrakten, stofflich anmutenden Gemälde von EJ Hauser setzen sich aus Schichten von Pixeln, Textfragmenten und schimärenhaften Figuren zusammen, die auf Netzwerke sowohl in der Natur und Pflanzenwelt hinweisen, wie auch auf digitale Systeme und Verflechtungen in unserer menschlichen Kommunikationswelt. Für sie bilden Buchstaben ein skulpturales Gerüst, eine kompositorische Struktur, die sich manchmal in reinen Textbildern auflöst, manchmal zum Text in Kombination mit Bildern führt oder manchmal unter nachfolgenden Farbschichten begraben wird. Manche sind sehr explizit, bei anderen muss man genauer hinschauen, dann findet man das Rückgrat und die Kurven verschiedener Buchstaben, die durcheinandergeworfen werden, um die Grenze zwischen Wort und Bild aufzuheben, gemischt mit schimärenhaften Figuren und totemartigen Symbolen, die die Verbundenheit des Lebens auf der Erde darstellen.
EJ Hauser interessiert dabei das Wood Wide Web, das komplexe unterirdische Netz aus Wurzeln, Pilzfäden und Bakterien, das Bäume und Pflanzen miteinander verbindet. Über das Myzel, ein Netz mikroskopisch kleiner Pilze unter dem Waldboden, findet eine pflanzliche Kommunikation statt, über das Informationen ausgetauscht werden. Das ist nicht unähnlich der Art und Weise, wie wir heute durch unsere Handys, sozialen Medien und das „unsichtbare“ Internet miteinander verbunden sind.
Die Ausstellung „Song of Summer“ wird eine neue Werkgruppe der Künstlerin mit Gemälden (die erstmalig in Acryl statt Öl entstanden sind) und Arbeiten auf Papier präsentieren und wird von einer Publikation mit Gesprächen zwischen EJ Hauser und Melissa Brown und Kathy Butterly begleitet.

“EJ Hauser | Song Of Summer” ist darüber hinaus für den diesjährigen VBKI-Kunstpreis nominiert. Die offizielle Preisverleihung findet am 15. September während der Berlin Art Week statt.
Most of us are so used to reading that we forget that each letter is a shape and each word is a composition. The type we read every day – in emails and books, on packaging and signs – has a significant aesthetic dimension. U.S. artist EJ Hauser has adopted graphic and typographic strategies for their philosophical purposes and works, revealing a new view of what we no longer see in everyday life among all the texts.
EJ Hauser’s quasi-abstract, fabric-like paintings are composed of layers of pixels, text fragments, and chimerical figures that refer to networks both in nature and the plant world, as well as to digital systems and interconnections in our human communication world. For them, letters form a sculptural framework, a compositional structure that sometimes dissolves into pure text images, sometimes leads to text in combination with images, or sometimes is buried under successive layers of paint. Some are very explicit, others require a closer look to find the spine and curves of different letters jumbled together to dissolve the boundary between word and image, mixed with chimerical figures and totemic symbols representing the interconnectedness of life on earth.
EJ Hauser is interested in the Wood Wide Web, the complex subterranean web on the planet. Plant communication takes place via the mycelium, a network of microscopic fungi beneath the forest floor, through which information is exchanged. This is not unlike the way we are connected today through our cell phones, social media, and the “invisible” Internet.
The exhibition “Song of Summer” will present a new group of works by the artist with paintings (which were created for the first time in acrylic) and works on paper. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with conversations between EJ Hauser and Melissa Brown and Kathy Butterly.
