Felix Oehmann (*1985, Heidelberg) lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in the class of Prof. Harald Klingelhöller, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 2012.
Felix Oehmann’s sculptural practice features an array of symbols such as animals, hands, hearts and smileys, as well as oversized everyday objects like keys, scissors, T-shirts and caps. These larger-than-life sculptures have also been exhibited amongst architecture, in the Walldorf school center near Heidelberg, where an oversized hook was installed on an ornate pedestal and a broken heart supported by a staircase. While his sculptures tend to offer a stylized manipulation of their original objects, Oehmann’s wooden wall pieces feature figurative engravings such as hands and legs, resembling delicate drawings.
Oehmann’s practice is always improvised and performative; his works emerge through the making process. Two-dimensional ideas are transformed into three-dimensional sculptures, often adopting a humorous attitude. His sculptures slump, fold, and unzip, their means of construction put on display. One could see this kind of exposure as an expression of vulnerability, but in Oehmann’s works it feels more like a playful, honest exploration of materiality. By turning a metaphorical magnifying glass on simple objects, he intends to reveal not only their complexity, but also the sensuality of different forms and materials.
Felix Oehmann’s work has been shown at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, DE; Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe, DE; Galerie Gisela Clement, Bonn, DE; Salon Babette, Berlin, DE; Ludwigsforum für internationale Kunst, Aachen, among others.
