HALLEN 06 | BERLIN ART WEEK

Find us at Wilhelm Hallen from Sept 6-13 during Berlin Art Week!

At this year’s Hallen 06, we are delighted to present the work “Von der Hand an die Wand” (From the Hand to the Wall), 2025, by Berlin based artist Alex Müller – a 25-meter-long installation of handwritten and typed letters that her grandmother had written to her son, Müller’s father. He had left East Berlin in 1961, the year the Wall was built, at the age of 17, without telling his parents, something his mother never forgave him for. There are 350 letters – all written in their home in Wilhelmsruh, about 200 meters away from the Hallen – in which they wrote to each other about everyday things, worries, subliminal accusations. There is talk of parcels, of possible meetings in Prague – as a defector, Müller’s father was not allowed to enter the GDR for more than a decade. The artist has printed the bundle of letters on round, soft, Graubner-like cushion pictures. They are a contemporary document and tell of a bygone era, of German-German history, on a small scale, exemplary, of the wall that was pushed between families.
