Anne Buckwalter’s creative practice explores the intersection of sexuality and domestic life. Inspired by the folk-art traditions of her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, her paintings arrange disparate objects in interior spaces, integrating the erotic with the mundane. By imagining obscure narratives that embrace paradoxes, her work delves into questions about the body, femininity, and desire.
Anne Buckwalter (b. 1987, Lancaster, PA) is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2021) and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2016). She has been an artist-in-residence at the Galveston Artist Residency, the Fores Project, Vermont Studio Center, the Studios at Mass MoCA, Hewnoaks Artist Colony, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. She has had recent solo exhibitions at Uffner & Liu, New York, NY (2025); Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, ME (2025); SOCO Gallery, Charlotte, NC (2025); Rebecca Camacho, San Francisco, CA (2024); MASSIMODECARLO, Paris, FR (2024); and Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY (2023).
Her work is in the collections of the Aishti Foundation, Lebanon; X Museum, Beijing, China; Art Museum of West Virginia, Morgantown, WV; the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, ME; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA; and Zuzeum, Latvia. Anne Buckwalter lives and works in Durham, Maine. Her next solo museum exhibition will take place at the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, PA, in fall 2026.
