A new body of works by Stephen Kent (b. 1985) is presented in the gallery’s Cabinet showroom
Using an array of different materials and techniques, the work of Stephen Kent (b. 1985) explores notions of image production and visual resolution and investigates cultural codes and the ways in which they manifest in seemingly mundane objects. In his new canvas works, Pennsylvania born and Berlin based artist continues to work with ideas of expanded still-life. High resolution scans from interior magazines are enlarged and printed on top of hand painted Gesso, resulting in a grouping of hyper zoomed moments of domestic objects and materials.
The work draws parallels between our post pandemic society and the historic Biedermeier era, in which social uncertainty turned one’s gaze into the safe interior of the home. The titles reflect abstract proverbial phrases, which allude to the hidden meanings and poetry within our everyday surroundings. The new series of work furthers Kent’s playful intervention within our material world while challenging the ways in which digital and analog gestures combine to form moments of discovery out of the ordinary.
