The exhibition TEXT-ile focuses on the works of nine artists who work at the interface between word and materiality. The exhibition presents 15 works by Peter Frederiksen, Anna Grath, EJ Hauser, Okka-Esther Hungerbühler, Stephen Kent, Ellen Lesperance, Nadine Schemmann, Martín Soto Climent, Rosemarie Trockel and Anna Virnich, most of which have never been shown before and some of which were created especially for the exhibition.
The exhibition focuses on the textile idea (textus, Latin for text, structure, fabric, weave, and texere/textum for weave, braid, join), which is not only about works with explicit textual elements, but also about (political) messages, (digital) text patterns, and communication in a broader sense.
The textile is not necessarily always demonstrated here through the use of fabrics, as in the work of Anna Grath, Nadine Schemmann, Martín Soto Climent, and Anna Virnich, but is also expressed through a textile language of form and thought: themes of communicative interweaving, the reflection of networks, and tradition through narration are also reflected in other materials, such as in the drawings of Ellen Lesperance, the mosaic collages of Stephen Kent, or the paintings of EJ Hauser and Okka-Esther Hungerbühler. The exhibiting artists build on the legacy of pioneers such as Rosemarie Trockel, from whom we show a work from 1993 in the exhibition as a starting point.
