Waiting is part of our everyday lives: we wait for the bus, the train, at the doctor’s and government offices, in traffic jams, or in line outside a club. Creative waiting for inspiration or joyful anticipation are among the more pleasant aspects; waiting takes on existential and political forms in places, such as prisons or for refugees at national borders or civic offices. Waiting is far more than a mere interruption of activity; it is an invisible architecture and the secret metronome of our society. In a world geared towards maximum acceleration and efficiency, delay acts like sand in the gears—and yet, it is precisely what makes the structure of our social time visible. Waiting rhythmizes our lives: it creates intervals, separations, and threshold moments between departure and arrival.
The exhibition Figures of Delay explores the different facets of waiting: How does delays shape our lives and work, our politics, and our society? Who has to wait while others move forward? An exhibition about the rhythm of our lives and the forms of delay.

Das Warten ist Teil unseres Alltags: wir warten auf den Bus, die Bahn, beim Arzt oder Amt, im Stau oder in der Schlange vor dem Club. Das kreative Warten auf Inspiration oder die freudige Erwartung gehören dabei zum angenehmeren Teil; existenzielle und politische Formen nimmt das Warten an Orten wie der Haft oder für Geflüchtete an Landesgrenzen oder Ämtern an. Doch Warten ist weit mehr als eine bloße Unterbrechung des Tuns; es ist eine unsichtbare Architektur und der heimliche Rhythmusgeber unserer Gesellschaft. In einer Welt, die auf maximale Beschleunigung und Effizienz getrimmt ist, wirkt der Verzug wie ein Sandkorn im Getriebe – und doch ist er es, der die Struktur unserer sozialen Zeit erst sichtbar macht. Warten rhythmisiert unser Leben: Es schafft Intervalle, Trennungen und Schwellenmomente zwischen Aufbruch und Ankunft.
Die Ausstellung Figures of Delay setzt sich mit den unterschiedlichen Facetten von Verzögerungen auseinander: Wie prägt das Warten unser Leben, unsere Politik, Arbeit und Gesellschaft? Wer muss warten, während andere vorankommen? Eine Ausstellung über den Rhythmus unseres Lebens und die Formen des Verzugs.
