EJ Hauser (*1967, Peru, IL, USA) live and work in Brooklyn, New York. They studied at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1998.
In their works, EJ Hauser combines impressions of natural phenomena with lyrical phrases, graphic and typographic strategies. Their images, which seem almost material, are formed from overlapping layers constituting abstract landscapes by means of large and small circles of color, deconstructed geometric figures, and representations of animals, mountains, ghosts, waves, peaks, or plants, such as moon seeds.
Hauser’s oeuvre intends to transcend the dichotomies of culture versus nature or nature versus technology as established in Western epistemology since the Enlightenment. In particular, they are concerned with portraying the interconnectedness of life on earth as holistic, showing how human, non-human, and more-than-human life are interconnected in a cosmos. They understand the social similarly to Bruno Latour, as being constituted of different elements that interact in a network. Relevant here is also the concept of the rhizome by Gilles Déleuze and Felix Guattarí, according to which the total network of the tree is invisible to the human eye because it its roots are hidden in the earth, leading us to constantly question our perception of what is understood as nature. Hauser, however, speaks of the Wood Wide Web.
EJ Hauser has had numerous solo exhibitions, including at Derek Eller, New York; parrasch heijnen, Los Angeles; Anton Kern Gallery, New York; and has been included in a variety of group exhibitions, including The Brooklyn Rail, New York; PALFREY, London; The Pit, Los Angeles; Alice Folker Gallery, Copenhagen; and the 2019 Venice Biennale.
