Stefan Hirsig

Inherent to Hirsig’s vibrant and expressive-abstract works is a unique formal language. Working in both large and small formats, his paintings and drawings are characterized by curved and powerful compositions. Rarely angular, these mostly round forms are seemingly always in dynamic motion. Precise geometric figures, circles, triangular patterns, and squares combine with seemingly more random formations, and garish hues next to subdued tones constitute themselves into a collage. In some of his works, the human figure also emerges: it is possible to decipher facial features and hands.
The starting point of Hirsig’s practice is a preoccupation with existence and the metaphysical question of what remains when one is no longer in the world. Thus, he also describes making art as a survival strategy that allows him to communicate with the world across national borders. He is an autodidact who is always concerned with leaving his work entirely to the world once it has been completed.
Stefan Hirsig (*1966 Berlin) has been part of numerous exhibitions, including at Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen, Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen, Galerie Martin Klosterfelde, Sprüth Magers, Munich, Heinrich Erhardt, Madrid, Marella Arte Contemporanea, Milan and Spencer Brownstone, New York. Stefan Hirsig  lives and works in Berlin. He studied from 1988 to 1993 at the Berlin University of the Arts with Bernd Koberling.
